Ways in without the usual marks
  • Diverse Qualifications Admission. For applicants whose transcript does not show their full potential: SFU looks beyond grades at commitment or excellence in other areas, or success despite difficult circumstances (refugee backgrounds, student athletes, learning exceptionalities, socio-economic challenges, systemic barriers, personal hardship). Applicants fill in a personal information profile and have a referee send a reference letter, with two referees named (an educator and a character reference). Who: Any applicant who meets SFU's minimum admission average (67% for high school applicants), the English and quantitative skills requirements and the program's course requirements; any province. Not for students who left a post-secondary institution in poor standing.
  • Undergraduate Admission Policy for Indigenous Students (UAPI). Indigenous applicants who do not meet the competitive average set by a faculty can apply under this policy, which considers educational history, cultural knowledge, work experience, goals and other achievements. Requires documentation of First Nations, Metis or Inuit citizenship or membership and a Supplemental Indigenous Undergraduate Admission Form (personal letter, educational history, non-educational achievements, community or cultural connections, two references). Who: First Nations, Metis and Inuit applicants (status and non-status), normally high school graduates who meet SFU's general minimum requirements; specific faculty or program prerequisites still apply. Any province.
  • Indigenous University Preparation Program (IUPP). A one-year pathway to support Indigenous students moving into undergraduate studies: first-year academic courses that can be credited toward the degree program of the student's choice, with academic supports and community connections from an Indigenous world view. Who: Indigenous (First Nations, Metis and Inuit) students; the eligibility details are on an application page that was not read.
  • Mature student admission. Applicants 23 or older can be considered as mature students without the usual high school record: they send a personal information profile (same deadline as the application) and at least one letter of reference. Preference goes to applicants who have completed some post-secondary work, usually four transferable academic courses (12 units), and have no gaps in essay writing or mathematics. Degree applicants must meet the literacy and quantitative skills requirements set for transfer students. Who: Canadian citizens or permanent residents (any province) aged 23 or older before classes start, who have attempted fewer than 24 units of transferable post-secondary work.

What do SFU graduates earn?

Statistics Canada does not publish pay by university, only by field for each province's graduates. Figures are for British Columbia bachelor's graduates, the class of 2022 two years after and the class of 2019 five years after, in 2024 dollars.
