Ways in without the usual marks
  • Mature Student admission. Adults who do not meet the regular admission requirements (for example, no high school diploma) can be admitted as mature students; they choose "Over 21 and have not graduated high school" on the application. Work or life experience may also earn credit through Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR). Program-specific requirements (Music audition, course prerequisites) still apply. Who: Canadian citizens or permanent residents aged 21 or older by the start of term (1 September, 1 January or 1 May) who do not meet regular admission requirements; no province limit stated. Applicants with fewer than 24 post-secondary credit hours and a GPA under 2.00 may also use this route if those courses were more than two years earlier.
  • Indigenous Health Studies Transition (IHST). An eight-month, 18 credit hour preparatory year to build academic skills in math, science and writing, with tutorials, counselling, peer study groups, Elder support and advocacy. Indigenous high school graduates are placed in it when their average is below 70%, their Grade 11 or 12 English is under 60% or missing, they have fewer than five academic courses, or they have a GED (General Educational Development test) or CAEC. Completers move to the Pre-Nursing or Pre-Psychiatric Nursing year; two Year 2 seats in each of the BN (Bachelor of Nursing) and the BScPN (Brandon site) are set aside for students coming through the Indigenous admission category. Capacity 20 students a year. Who: Self-identified Indigenous students who meet Brandon University's admission requirements; no province limit stated.
  • LPN to BN entry into Year 3. Practical nursing graduates of Assiniboine College or licensed practical nurses in Manitoba with recent practice hours get up to 52 or 58 credit hours of block transfer credit, take two bridging courses (71.287 and 71.288) plus English, statistics and other pre-entry courses, and enter Year 3 of the BN (Bachelor of Nursing). Apply by 1 March; enrolment limited to 12 a year. Who: Graduates of Assiniboine College's Enhanced (15 month) or Diploma (20 month) Practical Nursing programs, or LPNs in Manitoba, with the required practice hours in Manitoba in the past 24 months.
