  • Mature student admission. Applicants who do not meet the high school admission requirements may show readiness for university study instead: a personal statement on academic goals and potential developed through work, volunteering and life experience since high school, two letters of academic reference (not character, family or former high school teacher references), the high school transcript (completed or not) and proof of age. Trades or other further education can strengthen the application. Who: Canadian citizens or permanent residents aged 21 or older who do not meet the high school requirements and have not since attended a post-secondary institution recognized by Memorial.
  • Special admission. Applicants with no post-secondary study who do not meet the general admission requirements can ask to be admitted on special grounds, usually severe personal, family, financial, legal or medical circumstances, or a diagnosed learning issue, that are beyond their control and now resolved or accommodated. A letter from the applicant plus supporting documents (for example from the principal or guidance counsellor, a medical certificate, a psycho-educational assessment). Decided by the University Committee on Admissions (Grenfell: the Grenfell Campus Committee on Special Admission); decisions are final. Who: Applicants from high school with no previous post-secondary courses who do not meet general admission requirements.
  • Adult Basic Education (ABE) route. Memorial accepts the Newfoundland and Labrador Level III Adult Basic Education Diploma (36 credits) in place of a high school diploma, with at least 70% overall in English 3101A/B/C, Mathematics 3101A/B/C and one science set (Biology, Chemistry or Physics 3101/3102/3104 A/B/C). People who finished high school but missed requirements can take just the ABE courses they need. GED (General Educational Development test) and CAEC are not accepted. Out-of-province students missing a Grade 12 subject are pointed instead to Ontario online courses (Virtual High School, TVO ILC, Ontario Virtual School). Who: Adults completing ABE in Newfoundland and Labrador, or high school graduates upgrading missing subjects.
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Music admissions pilot. For the fall 2025 to fall 2028 intakes, Canadian applicants to the BFA (Theatre or Visual Arts, Grenfell Campus) and the BMus (St. John's) who do not meet the general admission requirements are automatically considered under modified requirements: Grade 12 English, six credits from an approved Group A list (which includes arts courses; for Ontario, for example AMI4M, AVI4M, ADA4M, ATC4M) and any two other Grade 12 credits, with at least 70% overall. Applicants still go through the audition, interview or portfolio. Offers are revoked if the school does not admit the student. Who: Canadian applicants to the BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) or BMus (Bachelor of Music), including Ontario students who lack a required subject such as mathematics or a laboratory science.
  • Indigenous seats in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Up to three seats a year in the four-year BScN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) are reserved for applicants with Indigenous membership who meet the admission requirements but are not among the top-ranked candidates. Applicants tick the box on the BScN application and provide documentation of Indigenous membership by the document deadline (Memorial's Indigenous Verification Policy applies). Who: Indigenous applicants to the four-year BScN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) who meet the admission requirements.
