What is it like at Dalhousie?
The same whatever program you pick.
- Who gets a room
- New, direct-from-high-school students (domestic or international) with a complete residence application on file by 15 May 2027
- Money just for your marks
- No automatic entrance scholarships published

- Ways in without the usual marks
- Mature applicant admission. Applicants who do not meet the regular admission requirements may apply to some first-year programs as mature applicants. All factors are considered, including a letter about life and work experience since last in full-time study, education goals and motivation. Mature students may be limited in how many courses they take in first year. Who: Canadian citizens or permanent residents aged 21 or older by the first day of classes, with no university study or less than one year of transferable coursework, and not in full-time university study for at least two years.
- Transition Year Program (TYP). A one-year university preparation program for African Nova Scotian and Indigenous students, run by the Faculty of Open Learning and Career Development. Courses: academic writing and study strategies, English, Black Studies, Indigenous Studies and math. Completing it earns four academic credits toward a Dalhousie degree, and TYP graduates are eligible for a tuition fee waiver covering tuition for their first undergraduate degree. Dalhousie says it 'offers financial support and a living allowance'. Who: African Nova Scotian and Indigenous applicants.
- Indigenous Student Access Pathway (ISAP). A one-year program on the Truro (Agricultural) campus for First Nations, Metis and Inuit students who would not otherwise meet Dalhousie's minimum high school prerequisites. Students take up to six courses a term (credit and non-credit) with dedicated Indigenous student supports, earning 18 to 24 transferable credits, then may apply to their chosen Dalhousie program for the following term. Who: First Nations, Metis and Inuit students (proof of Indigenous ancestry or a community letter), with a high school diploma and at least 65% in Academic English 12; direct from high school, mature, or with some post-secondary study.
- University Preparation (UPrep) courses. Online, self-paced non-credit courses from the Faculty of Open Learning and Career Development that Dalhousie accepts in place of Nova Scotia Grade 12 prerequisites: Academic Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Pre-Calculus Plus and Writing Skills for Academic Study. Open to anyone; you can apply to a degree program while taking them, and admissions can often decide on a mid-term grade. Who: Anyone missing or upgrading an admission prerequisite (you do not need to be a Dalhousie student).
