Job Bank's national median is $36.06 an hour, about $75,000 a year full time. The floor here is higher than most writing careers: even the low end is $27.00 an hour. British Columbia is highest at $43.27, Quebec at $41.54.

Software companies pay more than engineering firms at entry level. Contract roles pay a higher hourly rate but carry no benefits.

Writers who can read code, use version control and build a documentation site themselves are the ones who reach the top of this range.

There is no required credential, so the cheapest real route is a part time technical communication certificate taken online while you work, usually a couple of thousand dollars. Some people pay nothing at all and move across from a support or customer service job, building a portfolio by writing documentation for free open source projects. The high end is a four year degree in English, communications or engineering at up to 12,000 a year. Writing software is normally supplied by the employer, and the free tools are good enough to build a portfolio.
There is no single required program in Canada, so most people arrive from English, journalism, engineering or a support job.
Salary
The usual arrangement, with benefits. Job Bank reports about 95% of people in this work get at least one non-wage benefit.
Contract
Six to eighteen month contracts are common in government and large engineering projects.
Freelance
Usually $60 to $110 an hour for experienced writers, often for companies without a documentation team.

Technology companies sometimes include share options in the package.

Grades 10 to 12
English, plus computer science, physics or any technical subject. Being good at both halves is the whole point of this job.

Reading code, even a little, is the biggest single advantage in this field.
Physics or technology
Engineering documentation needs someone who understands what the machine does.
French
Federal government documentation is produced in both official languages.
No licence exists. The standards come from the work itself. Anyone documenting federal government services follows the Canada.ca Content Style Guide, which requires plain language: short sentences, common words, and structure built around what the reader needs to do. Medical device and aviation documentation is governed by safety regulations, and a badly written procedure there is a serious problem, not a style issue.

The British Columbia Institute of Technology and Simon Fraser University offer part-time technical and professional writing courses.
Ontario
Algonquin College, Seneca Polytechnic and Humber Polytechnic run professional and technical writing programs and certificates.
Alberta
Mount Royal University and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology teach technical communication.
Anywhere
Most certificates in this field are delivered online part time, so you can study while working.
Things you don't need, but that help.
Docs as code
Writing in Markdown, storing it in Git and publishing through the same pipeline developers use. The clearest dividing line in pay.
API documentation
Documenting an API (application programming interface) for other developers. The best paid specialty in the field.
Reading code
Enough Python or JavaScript to test the instructions yourself instead of asking an engineer.
Information architecture
Designing how a whole help centre is organised, not just writing pages for it.
Regulated industries
Medical devices, aerospace and pharmaceuticals pay more because the documentation is audited.
Open source contributions
The easiest portfolio in any writing career. Fix a confusing page and it is public forever.
Plain language training
Government and healthcare clients ask for it directly.
Editing credentials
Editors Canada certification is not required but signals you know the craft side.
Diagrams
A writer who can draw a clear flow diagram saves a reader ten paragraphs.
Day to day, pros and cons, where you'd work.
Find out what changed: a new feature, a revised procedure, a bug that made an old page wrong. Track down the engineer who knows, ask questions until you actually understand it, then test the steps yourself. Write, get it reviewed by someone technical, fix what you got wrong, publish. Meetings are frequent because you are the person who has to understand everything before anyone else writes it down.

The Canada.ca Content Style Guide requires federal web content to use short sentences and simple words, because research cited in the guide suggests about half of Canadians face literacy challenges.
Job Bank counted about 8,000 technical writers in Canada in 2023, but the low end of the wage range is $27.00 an hour, higher than the median for several other creative careers.
At many software companies the help pages sit in the same repository as the product and go through the same review process. Technical writers file changes the same way developers do.
Job Bank reports that 31% of Canadian technical writers are 50 or over, so some of the openings in the next few years will come from people leaving rather than growth.
