Money

What you earn and what it costs to get there.

What copywriters make

Typical

$77,000

Junior

$53,000

Senior or creative director

$110,000

Job Bank's national median is $36.81 an hour, about $77,000 a year full time. Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal agencies set the pace. Small-city and non-profit work pays below the low end of this range.

First job

$50,000 to $58,000

Junior copywriter at an agency or on an in-house marketing team

Many people start on a short contract or a paid internship and get hired from there. Unpaid internships still exist in this field and you should treat them with suspicion.

Where it tops out

$110,000 and up

Senior copywriter, creative director, or a writer inside a large tech company

Job Bank's high figure is $53 an hour. Moving from writing ads to running a creative team is the usual way past it.

What it costs to get there

College advertising or creative program (2 to 3 years)
$4,000 to $8,000 a year
One-year graduate certificate in copywriting
$6,000 to $10,000
University degree in English, communications or marketing
$7,000 to $12,000 a year
Self-taught with a portfolio
Close to nothing beyond a laptop and your time
Roughly, all in
Nothing to $48,000

Tuition, fees, exams and kit. Not rent, food or travel

The low end is zero because nobody in this field checks your diploma, they read your portfolio, and you can build one with free tools and your own time. The high end is a four year university degree in English, communications or marketing at the top of the tuition range. A one year graduate certificate in copywriting sits between the two at $6,000 to $10,000. Spend on training only if it hands you finished work and contacts, because those are the two things that get you hired.

Nobody checks your diploma in this field. They read your portfolio. Spend money on training only if it gets you a portfolio and contacts.

How copywriters get paid

  • Salary

Agencies, in-house brand teams, banks, retailers and tech companies.

  • Freelance day rate or project fee

Common once you have a name. Feast and famine until then.

  • Contract

Three to twelve month contracts are normal in agencies, often without benefits.

  • Retainer

A fixed monthly fee for ongoing work with one client. The steadiest freelance money there is.

Education

The exact path from high school to qualified.

The path

There is no licence and no required degree. You get hired on a book of work.

  1. 1

    High school

    Grades 11 and 12

English, media studies, business. Start writing things nobody asked you to write.

  2. 2

    Training (optional but common)

    1 to 4 years

A college advertising or creative advertising program, a one-year copywriting graduate certificate, or a university degree in English or communications.

  3. 3

    Build a portfolio

    3 to 12 months

Eight to ten campaigns, real or invented, that show a clear idea and a clear line. This is the entire hiring decision.

  4. 4

    Internship or junior role

    1 to 2 years

Usually paired with a junior art director. You pitch ideas together and get most of them killed.

  5. 5

    Mid-level and up

    3 to 8 years in

Own your own accounts, then lead a team as a creative director or specialize in one branch such as brand voice.

High school courses that help

  • English

The entire job is written in it. Grammar you can break on purpose is the goal.

  • Business or marketing

Copy exists to move a product. Knowing why helps.

  • Media arts or visual arts

You will work shoulder to shoulder with designers and art directors.

  • Psychology

    Persuasion is the job.

Time and money, at a glance

Years after high school
0 to 4, depending on the route
Admission
Ordinary grades, plus a writing test or portfolio for creative programs
Total tuition
$0 to $40,000
Paid while training?
Sometimes, through paid internships and freelance gigs

Not regulated, and that cuts both ways

Anyone can call themselves a copywriter tomorrow. There is no exam, no registration and no protected title. That means you can get in without debt, and it also means you are competing with everyone else who worked that out. The Canadian Marketing Association runs the Chartered Marketer designation and short courses including one on copywriting, but no employer requires them.

Optional

Things you don't need, but that help.

Specialties that pay more

  • Product and interface writing

The words inside apps and software, often called UX (user experience) writing. The best paid branch.

  • Direct response

Emails and landing pages measured on sales. Boring to some people, very well paid.

  • Brand voice and strategy

Defining how a company sounds, not just writing one ad.

  • Regulated industries

Pharmaceutical, financial and legal copy. Tighter rules, higher rates.

Nice-to-haves

  • A portfolio site

Not a document. A page a stranger can skim in two minutes.

  • SEO (search engine optimization) basics

How search engines pick pages. Half of content writing jobs list it.

  • Awards entries

The Effie Awards Canada, run by the Institute of Canadian Agencies, and similar shows get juniors noticed.

  • Basic video and social editing

Writers who can cut a 15 second spot themselves get hired first.

About AI and this job

AI tools write passable filler copy already, and the low end of the content-writing market has shrunk because of it. What has not been automated is the part clients actually pay for: knowing which idea is worth making, arguing for it, and getting it approved. If you plan to compete on producing large amounts of ordinary text, pick something else. If you can have the idea, you are fine.

Extras

Day to day, pros and cons, where you'd work.

A typical day

A brief lands in the morning: a client wants people to switch phone plans. You and an art director throw out twenty ideas, most of them bad, and pick three. Present internally, get notes, rebuild. In between, you write the unglamorous stuff that pays the bills: emails, banner lines, product pages, a script rewrite. Some days are pure editing. Deadlines are short and revisions never stop.

The honest trade-offs

The good

  • You can enter with no degree and no debt
  • Remote and freelance friendly
  • Decent pay for a creative field, well above most writing jobs
  • Your work is visible in the world

The hard parts

  • Most of what you write gets killed by someone who is not a writer
  • Agency culture can mean long hours before a pitch
  • AI tools have wiped out the easy end of the market
  • Contract work is common, so benefits and stability are not guaranteed

Work life

Typical hours
40 a week, longer in pitch weeks
Remote work
Very common
Physical demand
Low
Unionized
No

Factoids

Things people don't tell you.

Copywriters usually come in pairs

Agencies still team one copywriter with one art director, a structure invented at an American agency in the 1960s. You are hired, promoted and often laid off as a unit.

Canada has its own effectiveness awards

The Effie Awards Canada, run by the Institute of Canadian Agencies, judge advertising on whether it actually worked, not on how it looks. That makes them the awards clients care about.

There is a designation, but almost nobody asks for it

The Canadian Marketing Association runs the Chartered Marketer designation, the only marketing designation in the country. Copywriting jobs almost never list it, which tells you how much the portfolio matters.

Where these numbers come from

Last checked September 2026. Pay figures are typical full-time annual amounts in Canadian dollars, based on Government of Canada Job Bank wage data and published salary grids. They vary by province, employer and experience. Tuition is for domestic students.
