What dropshippers make

Typical

$0

Most stores

$0

Top few percent

$60,000

There is no wage survey for this, and Shopify does not publish how many stores fail. Seller reports and the store-tracking firms that do estimate it put most first stores at a loss, closed within a year. So the honest typical figure is zero or below. The few who make a living run several products, test hard and usually end up holding their own stock.

Your first store

Often a loss of $500 to $3,000

Spent on ads, apps and sample orders before a product works or you stop

Reddit threads are full of first stores that spent $800 on ads for 1 sale. That is normal, not bad luck: most products you test will not sell at a profit, and every test costs real ad money.

Sales are not profit

Often 10% to 20% left

Of each sale, for stores that do work

Out of a $40 sale come the product, shipping, duties, a payment fee near 3%, apps, refunds and the ads that found the buyer. Ads alone often eat a third or more. Guru screenshots show sales, which is why they look so big.

What it costs to start

Shopify Basic plan
$39 a month, or $29 a month paid yearly
Domain name
About $15 a year
Apps for reviews, upsells and supplier links
$0 to $100 a month
Sample orders to check quality and delivery time
$50 to $200
Ad testing
$500 to $3,000, usually lost while you learn
Roughly, all in
$300 to $5,000

Tuition, fees, exams and kit. Not rent, food or travel

The low end is a Shopify plan, a domain, a few sample orders and a very small ad test, about what a cautious first store costs over 3 months. The high end is several months of the store and its apps plus $3,000 or more of ad testing, which is where many first stores end up before they work or close. A paid course is not needed and is not counted; they commonly sell for $500 to $5,000. Lost money on unsold ad tests is the real cost, and it is not refunded.

Start with the smallest ad budget that gives you an answer, and decide in advance how much you are willing to lose.

Where the money goes missing

  • Payment holds

Shopify Payments can hold a share of every sale, for example 10% for 120 days, if refunds or chargebacks climb.

  • Chargebacks

A buyer disputes the charge with their bank. You lose the sale, pay a fee, and too many can close your account.

  • Slow shipping refunds

Two to three week delivery from overseas brings complaints, refunds and bad reviews.

  • Ad account bans

Meta and TikTok ad accounts get restricted with little warning, often mid-test.

  • Import duties

Since August 2025 every package from abroad pays duty, which cut the margin on cheap products.

Education

The exact path from high school to qualified.

How to become a dropshipper in the United States

No degree or licence. You learn by testing products with your own money.

  1. 1

    Learn the basics for free

    1 to 2 months

Shopify's own guides and free videos cover store setup, suppliers and ads. You do not need a course to start.

  2. 2

Pick a narrow niche and vet suppliers

    1 month

Order samples yourself. Time how long they take to arrive and check what turns up.

  3. 3

    Build the store

    1 to 2 weeks

AI tools can write product pages and build a store in an afternoon. So can everyone else, which is why the store is not the hard part.

  4. 4

Test products with small ad budgets

    3 to 12 months

Most tests fail. You are looking for one product where the ads pay for themselves with something left.

  5. 5

    Grow or stop

    1 to 3 years

The ones who last usually move to faster US warehouses, their own brand and stock they hold. Others stop and keep the skills.

School subjects that help

  • Math

Margins, percentages and break-even. If you cannot work out profit per order you will lose money without noticing.

  • Business or marketing

Why people buy, pricing and customer service.

  • Media arts

Short video ads are most of the job. Editing and filming skills matter.

  • English

Product pages, ad scripts and calm emails to angry customers.

Time and money, at a glance

Time before the few who succeed earn a living
1 to 3 years
Entry requirements
None. You need to be 18 for most payment and ad accounts
Cost to start
$300 to $5,000, mostly ads
Paid while learning?
No. You pay to learn, and most never earn it back

Licences and rules

You need no licence, but rules still apply. The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) Mail Order Rule says you must ship within the time you advertise, or within 30 days if you say nothing, and offer a refund if you cannot. Many states make you collect sales tax once your sales there pass a set level, often $100,000 a year. Profit is self-employment income, so you report it to the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) and pay self-employment tax on top of income tax. Your city or state may want a business licence or a registered business name.

The end of duty-free packages

For years, packages worth under $800 entered the US with no duty. That rule made cheap dropshipping from China work. It was suspended for every country in August 2025, a June 2026 rule made the suspension open-ended, and a 2025 law ends it for good from July 1, 2027. Every order from abroad now pays duty, so check the landed cost before you price anything.

Optional

Things you don't need, but that help.

Skills that change your odds

  • Paid ads

Reading the numbers on Meta and TikTok ads and killing losers fast. This is the core skill.

  • Short video

Filming and editing ads that look like real people using the product.

  • Unit economics

A spreadsheet of every cost per order, so you know your true profit.

  • Supplier management

Negotiating price, quality and shipping time, and switching when a supplier slips.

  • Customer service

    Fast, polite answers prevent chargebacks.

AI dropshipping, honestly

  • AI store builders

Real, and fast. They remove the easy part, not the hard part.

  • AI ad creatives

Useful for testing many versions quickly. Platforms still reject or limit weak, copied ads.

  • AI product research

Tools point everyone at the same trending products at the same moment.

  • Done-for-you AI stores

Treat these as a warning sign. The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) has shut down several, and buyers lost millions.

The course sellers

A lot of the money in dropshipping is made selling dropshipping: courses, private Discord groups, winning-product lists and coaching at $500 to $5,000. The screenshots usually show sales, not profit after ads. Under the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) Business Opportunity Rule, sellers of business opportunities who make income claims have to back them up. Ask any guru for profit after ad spend, not revenue.

Extras

Day to day, pros and cons, where you'd work.

What a dropshipper does day to day

You start by checking yesterday's ad results and switching off anything that lost money. Then you answer customer emails, most of them asking where their order is. Midday is supplier messages and fixing a product page. Afternoons go on filming or editing new ads to test. Evenings you watch the new tests spend money and try not to change them too soon. When a product works, every day becomes keeping stock and shipping times under control.

The honest pros and cons of being a dropshipper

The good

  • Cheap to start compared with holding stock
  • You learn ads, copywriting and video, which employers pay for
  • Work from anywhere with a laptop
  • A working product can scale fast

The hard parts

  • Most stores lose money and close within a year
  • Thin margins that one ad price rise can wipe out
  • You answer for a supplier you do not control
  • Payment holds, chargebacks and ad bans can freeze your cash

Work life

Typical hours
Part time at first, 40 to 60 a week once a product works
Remote work
Fully remote
Physical demand
Low
Income stability
Very low. A winning product can stop selling in weeks

Factoids

Things people don't tell you.

A $21.8 million lesson in AI stores

Automators AI promised passive income from online stores run with AI. The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) said most buyers lost money, got a judgment of about $21.8 million and banned two owners for life from selling e-commerce coaching.

The shipping rule is from 1975

The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) rule that makes online stores ship on time or offer a refund was written for mail-order catalogs in 1975. It now covers every internet order, including dropshipped ones.

Your payout can be held for months

Shopify can keep part of every sale in reserve, for example 10% for 120 days, when it sees risk such as rising chargebacks or slow delivery. Fast-growing new stores are exactly what triggers it.

TikTok Shop bans the classic trick

TikTok Shop does not let you buy a product from another online retailer and have it shipped to your customer. Sellers must control the stock and meet fast delivery deadlines.
