Money

What you earn and what it costs to get there.

What social workers make

Typical

$75,000

New grad, community agency

$58,000

Senior, hospital or child protection

$95,000

Job Bank's median is about $38 an hour, roughly $80,000 a year full time, with a spread of about $52,000 to $105,000. Hospitals, child protection agencies and government pay the most. Non-profit community agencies pay $10,000 to $20,000 less for the same credentials.

Starting pay

$28 to $35 an hour

About $58,000 to $70,000 a year full time

A BSW (bachelor of social work) at a community agency starts at the low end. An MSW (master of social work) in a hospital starts near the top.

Top of the range

$45 to $50 an hour

Senior hospital or child protection social workers, around $90,000 to $100,000

Private practice therapy is the ceiling-breaker: MSW (master of social work) holders can bill $130 to $180 an hour for counselling.

What it costs to get there

BSW (bachelor of social work, 4 years)
$6,000 to $9,000 a year
MSW (master of social work, 1 to 2 years)
$8,000 to $15,000 a year
Provincial registration
About $400 a year in Ontario, $300 for new grads
Police record check, placement costs
A few hundred dollars
Roughly, all in
$25,000 to $60,000

Tuition, fees, exams and kit. Not rent, food or travel

The low end is a four year bachelor of social work at a lower tuition province, plus the police record check and the first year of provincial registration. The high end adds a master of social work on top, which is what most clinical, hospital and supervisory jobs ask for. Registration is roughly 400 dollars a year in Ontario and continues for your whole career. Placements run to hundreds of unpaid hours, so the real squeeze is months of full time work with no pay, which is deliberately not added to these figures.

Total tuition around $30,000 to $50,000. Placements are unpaid, and there are hundreds of hours of them.

Benefits

  • Defined-benefit pension

Hospitals, school boards, child protection and government all offer one.

  • Union protection

Most public-sector social workers are unionized.

  • Extended health, including counselling for you

Many employers cover therapy for staff. You will use it.

  • Regular hours

Most jobs are Monday to Friday, unlike nursing.

Education

The exact path from high school to qualified.

The path

A 4-year degree gets you working. A master's gets you into hospitals and private practice.

  1. 1

    High school

    Grades 11 and 12

English and social sciences. Volunteer experience matters as much as marks.

  2. 2

    BSW (bachelor of social work)

    4 years

Four years, with 700 or more hours of supervised placement in real agencies. Some schools admit from high school; others take you after 1 or 2 years of general arts.

  3. 3

MSW (master of social work), optional but common

    1 to 2 years

Two years, or one year if you already hold a BSW. Needed for most hospital jobs and for private counselling practice.

  4. 4

    Register with your provincial college

    A few weeks

In Ontario that is the OCSWSSW (Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers). Registration protects the title social worker.

  5. 5

    First job

    Right after registration

Child protection agencies and hospitals hire constantly. Expect a police check and a heavy caseload from month one.

High school courses that help

  • English

Case notes, court reports and funding applications. You write constantly.

  • Social sciences and family studies

  • Indigenous studies

A large share of social work in Canada involves Indigenous families and communities.

  • French or another language

Opens federal, Quebec and newcomer-services jobs.

It is a regulated profession

Every province regulates social work and protects the title. In Ontario you register with the OCSWSSW (Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers) and use the letters RSW (registered social worker). Moving provinces usually means a straightforward transfer. Registered social workers in Ontario are also allowed to practise psychotherapy, which is a big reason MSW (master of social work) graduates open private practices.

Where people study

Most provinces have several accredited programs. A few examples:

  • University of Toronto, Wilfrid Laurier, York, McMaster, Carleton

    Ontario

  • UBC (University of British Columbia), University of Victoria

    British Columbia

  • University of Calgary, University of Manitoba, University of Regina

    Prairies

  • McGill, Université de Montréal, Dalhousie, Memorial

    Quebec and Atlantic Canada

Optional

Things you don't need, but that help.

Credentials that pay more or open doors

  • MSW (master of social work)

Opens hospitals, mental health teams and private practice. The single biggest pay lever.

  • Child protection authorization

Provincial training courses. Child protection is the biggest single employer of new grads.

  • Private counselling practice

Registered social workers can offer therapy privately in Ontario and most provinces, at $130 to $180 an hour.

  • Supervision and management

Supervisor and program director roles pay $95,000 to $120,000.

Nice-to-haves before you apply

  • Volunteer with a shelter, food bank or youth program

  • Crisis line training

  • A second language

  • Lived experience

Programs value it. So do clients.

The faster road: a college diploma

A 2-year college diploma (social service worker, SSW) gets you into the field faster, at $40,000 to $55,000 a year, doing case work and support roles. Many SSW (social service worker) grads later bridge into a BSW (bachelor of social work) with credit for the diploma.

Extras

Day to day, pros and cons, where you'd work.

A typical day

Hospital social worker: morning rounds with the medical team, then meetings with families about discharge, long-term care or money problems. Afternoon: phone calls to community agencies, charting, and one crisis you did not plan for. Child protection: home visits, court paperwork, and a phone that never stops. Caseloads of 20 to 30 families are normal.

The honest trade-offs

The good

  • Strong demand in every province
  • Pension, union and regular hours in public jobs
  • Many settings: hospitals, schools, courts, addiction, seniors, private therapy
  • Faster and cheaper than becoming a psychologist

The hard parts

  • Pay is modest for the training and the stress
  • Vicarious trauma is real and burnout rates are high
  • Heavy documentation and court work
  • Community agencies pay poorly and run on short-term grants

Work life

Typical hours
35 to 40, Monday to Friday; on-call in child protection
Remote work
Some: virtual counselling and phone-based case work
Physical demand
Low, but home visits can be unsafe
Unionized
Usually, in public settings

Factoids

Things people don't tell you.

Canada's first social work school

The University of Toronto opened the country's first social work program in 1914, more than a century ago.

Mostly women

Most Canadian social workers are women, by a wide margin. It is one of the most female-dominated professions in the country.

The therapist on your benefits plan

In Ontario, registered social workers may practise psychotherapy, and most workplace health plans cover them. That is why an MSW (master of social work) is one of the most common credentials among private therapists.

Not just child protection

Social workers plan hospital discharges, sit in family court, work in prisons, staff Indigenous child and family agencies, and run employee assistance programs.

Where these numbers come from

Last checked September 2026. Pay figures are typical full-time annual amounts in Canadian dollars, based on Government of Canada Job Bank wage data and published salary grids. They vary by province, employer and experience. Tuition is for domestic students.
