Job Bank's national median is $34 an hour, about $71,000 a year full time, with a spread of $23 to $50 an hour. The page is titled behavioural therapist and pools everyone in counselling and specialized therapy, so the low end reflects front-line therapists without a master's. Certified analysts who supervise programs usually earn $75,000 to $100,000.

Six years of tuition is the whole cost: a four year bachelor's degree then a two year master's carrying the required behaviour analysis coursework. The low end is both at in province public rates with your supervised fieldwork hours overseen free by an employer. The high end is a costlier master's, certification and application fees at the top of the range and some supervision bought privately at fifty to one hundred and fifty dollars an hour. Most people earn a therapist's wage during the master's and the supervised hours, which softens the debt a lot.

Psychology is the usual route. Seneca and other Ontario colleges run 4-year honours degrees in behavioural psychology built for this career.

Instructor therapist or behaviour technician jobs in autism programs. Real experience before, or during, the master's.
Master's degree with behaviour analysis coursework
2 years
A master's that includes the verified course sequence set by the BACB (Behavior Analyst Certification Board). Brock, Seneca and several other schools offer it.
Supervised fieldwork, exam, registration
1 to 2 years
Roughly 1,500 to 2,000 supervised hours, then the certification exam. In Ontario you also register with the CPBAO (College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario), which runs its own entry exam and a period of supervised practice.

On July 1, 2024 Ontario became the first province to regulate behaviour analysts. You must register with the CPBAO (College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario) to use the title, and the college runs its own exam. In other provinces the job is not licensed, but nearly every employer and funder requires the BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) credential from the BACB (Behavior Analyst Certification Board), a US body. The BACB is changing its requirements in 2027, so check the current handbook.

Observe a therapist running a program with a child, check the data from the past week, adjust the program. Meet parents to train them on what to do at home. Write a behaviour plan for a school that has asked for help. Supervise two junior staff toward their hours. Some days are mostly in a clinic; consultants spend a lot of time driving between homes, daycares and schools.

On July 1, 2024 Ontario became the first province in Canada to regulate behaviour analysts, folding them into what is now the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario. Other provinces still rely on the US certification.
Outside Ontario, the standard credential is the BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst), issued by a US board. Canadian analysts write the same exam as their American colleagues, and the board is changing its requirements in 2027.
Behaviour analysis is one of the few therapy fields where every session produces numbers. Therapists count target behaviours in real time, and the analyst changes the program based on the graph, not on a hunch.
