Is it hard to get into UdeS?

What UdeS asks of an applicant from a high school in Ontario. Its own province's students apply with their own courses and, often, a different tuition rate.

37 other programs are not a straight application from Grade 12 in Ontario. What each asks first:

  • 4 programs: No: a year of university first; with an excellent record UdeS can make an offer on condition you finish it.
  • 22 programs: Only with an excellent record: UdeS then places you in its 4-year bachelor, a preparatory first year on campus before this program, on one application.
  • 10 programs: No: UdeS asks for 13 years of school, so a year of university comes first, then an application.
  • 1 program: Not stated: UdeS's law faculty asks students from outside Quebec to contact it.

Ways in without the usual marks
  • Baccalauréat 4 ans en sciences. A 120-credit bachelor for students from school systems other than Quebec's: a first preparatory year on campus (24 to 30 credits, one of six cheminements: computer science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, quantum information science, life sciences) then the student moves into the chosen 90-credit bachelor. Passing all required courses with a cumulative average of at least 2.0 out of 4.3 is needed to move on. One application and one study permit for all four years. Who: Holders of a high school diploma from outside Quebec with 12 years of schooling and an excellent record (so an OSSD (Ontario Secondary School Diploma)), who apply to one of the Faculty of science's 3-year bachelors and are found eligible; no direct application.
  • Baccalauréat 4 ans en sciences humaines. A 120-credit bachelor for students who completed 12 years of schooling outside Quebec: a first preparatory year (9 credits of common core and 15 to 21 credits of options) then the chosen 90-credit bachelor. Nine cheminements: communication appliquee, etudes anglaises et interculturelles (admissions suspended for that program in 2026-27), etudes litteraires et culturelles, etudes politiques appliquees, geomatique appliquee a l'environnement, histoire, musique, philosophie, traduction professionnelle. Fall and winter entry (fall only for communication and music). Who: Holders of a high school diploma from outside Quebec with 12 years of schooling and an excellent record, admitted to the 3-year bachelor on condition of a preparatory year; no direct application.
  • Certificat préparatoire aux programmes de 1er cycle. A 30-credit certificate on the Campus principal (fall entry, full or part time) that gives the knowledge needed for first-cycle programs in engineering, science and health. Its courses do not count toward a bachelor. For students from outside Quebec it is the preparatory year that engineering requires of everyone who did not finish a Quebec CEGEP (a Quebec public college). Who: Students from outside Quebec with a high school diploma, 12 years of schooling, an excellent record and working French, who have been admitted on condition to a first-cycle program; also Quebec students missing science prerequisites.
  • Reconnaissance des acquis extrascolaires (admission on the basis of experience). UdeS (Université de Sherbrooke)'s general rule lets a faculty admit a person who lacks the usual diploma if it recognises enough prior learning. The prior-learning process for admission asks for a recognised high school diploma, 2 to 3 years of significant experience related to the program, and a file of evidence; it takes weeks to months, has costs after a free first meeting, and is open regardless of age or nationality. Who: Adults with a high school diploma and 2 to 3 years of relevant experience who do not meet a program's admission requirements.
  • Microprogramme de 1er cycle de qualification aux études à l'École de gestion. A 12-credit microprogram (Sherbrooke or Longueuil, any term) for people who do not meet the admission conditions of the Ecole de gestion's certificates: it shows equivalent preparation for later admission to the business administration or applied economics certificates, with some credits recognised. Open to holders of a DEC (diplôme d'études collégiales, the Quebec college diploma) or equivalent, or a high school diploma plus three years of full-time relevant work. Who: Adults without the usual admission requirements, including holders of a high school diploma with three years of full-time relevant work experience.
  • Contingent des Premières Nations et Inuit du Québec. Some quota programs (for example nursing, occupational therapy and physiotherapy) keep places for Indigenous applicants under specific rules. Who: Applicants who are both Quebec residents and First Nations or Inuit members (holders of a college or university diploma), so not open to Indigenous students from Ontario.

What do UdeS graduates earn?

Statistics Canada does not publish pay by university, only by field for each province's graduates. Figures are for Quebec bachelor's graduates, the class of 2022 two years after and the class of 2019 five years after, in 2024 dollars.
