Commitments
What a school or school board can hold Careerhelp to. Every line is a standard the site is held to from the day it was written, whether or not a board has signed, because a commitment we are not already keeping is not one we can sell.
Last updated 30 October 2026.
What this is
Everything here either describes what the site already does or is a decision the owner, Vedant Singh, has taken. Nothing in it is planned rather than done, except where it says so. The same text lives in the site's code repository as docs/COMMITMENTS.md, where it changes only by a dated commit; this page is that document, published for a board to read and file. For a licensed board it is part of the agreement.
1. What the figures are, and when each is refreshed
Every figure on the site is copied from a page that was opened, and every page lists the sources its figures come from. Each career page shows the date its figures were last checked; each school and program file carries a checked date. The refresh calendar:
| Kind of figure | Source | Refreshed | Shown on the site as |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pay, pay range, outlook (Canada) | Government of Canada Job Bank | Within 60 days of Job Bank publishing new wage data, and in any case checked once a year by 31 October | "Checked" date on the career page |
| Pay, pay range, outlook (United States) | Federal wage survey (May estimates, via My Next Move) | Within 60 days of the new May estimates being published, and checked once a year by 31 October | "Checked" date on the career page |
| Training path, licensing, courses to take | Regulators, colleges, provincial and state bodies | Checked once a year by 31 October, and whenever a correction arrives | "Checked" date on the career page |
| Admission averages, required courses, supplementary applications and deadlines | Each university's and college's own admissions pages | Re-read every year between 15 August and 30 September, before Ontario's applications open in early October; deadlines re-checked again by 15 January for Ontario | Checked date on the school and program pages |
| Deadline calendar (Ontario universities) | Each program's own admissions page; for a program's date to apply, the school's own dates page where the program page gives none, and otherwise the common date as the university states it, marked "Apply: check". Every date is re-read on its page before it goes on the calendar | Re-read with the yearly pass by 30 September and again by 15 January; a date no longer on the page comes off the calendar the same day | "Read on the school's page on" date at the top of the calendar |
| Entering averages (Ontario universities) | Council of Ontario Universities, Common University Data Ontario (CUDO), section B3 | Re-read each fall once the council publishes a new entering class, by 31 December | Entering class named beside every figure |
| Tuition, fees, residence, scholarships | Each school's own fee pages; Statistics Canada for rent | Re-read every year by 31 October, for the current academic year | Checked date on the school page |
| US admissions, cost, debt, graduate pay | College Scorecard and IPEDS (the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System), US Department of Education | Within 60 days of each annual release | Checked date on the school page |
| US test policies | Each school's own admissions page (FairTest's list only where a school's page cannot be read) | Re-read every year by 30 September | Policy, condition and link on the school page |
| Every source link | Scripted link check | Re-run monthly, and after any batch of content changes; results published on the sources pages | The link-check table on the sources pages |
Rules that go with the calendar:
- A figure a source has stopped publishing is marked "not published", never estimated or carried forward silently.
- A figure from a secondary compilation (a list, a ranking, a wiki) is never used where the institution's own page can be read. Where the institution's site refuses automated reading, the figure comes from the page as read when it was collected, from a dated archived copy, or from a person opening it in a browser, and the source note says which. Our reader never changes how it identifies itself to get past a refusal.
- Changing a number changes the checked date in the same commit. The date is the promise.
2. Corrections
- Every page carries a "Spot a mistake" box that reaches the owner directly.
- A report is answered within one school day and, where it is right, the figure is fixed in the data file (so every page built from it changes) and live within three school days. Most are fixed the same day.
- Corrections are logged, with the date, the pages and what changed, on a public page, the corrections page, from 24 October 2026 onward, with the corrections made before that date listed from the site's change history.
- A correction that reveals a wrong source is fixed at the source, not patched on one page, and the sources page is updated the same day.
3. Availability
- The site is static: every page is built in advance and served from a content delivery network, so there is no database or server to fail under load.
- Target: 99.5 percent of minutes in any calendar month, measured by an independent uptime monitor (UptimeRobot, checking the home page every five minutes since 24 October 2026) with a public record: the status page.
- If the target is missed: a written explanation within five school days and a credit of one month's fee.
- Known exception: the hosting provider's automatic attack mitigation can show a short security check to visitors during a traffic anomaly (it did for about half an hour on 23 October 2026). We will say so when it happens and count it against the target.
4. Accessibility
- Target standard: WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) 2.0 Level AA, which is what the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act requires of public-sector websites and, by extension, of what boards buy. In the US, the Department of Justice's 2024 rule under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act sets WCAG 2.1 Level AA for public schools' and districts' web content, from April 26, 2027 for the largest; the automated checks already run against the WCAG 2.1 rules for levels A and AA.
- The accessibility statement, with the method and findings of each pass, is at /accessibility: an automated pass, a keyboard pass and an accessibility-tree pass (24 October 2026) and a screen reader pass by a person with NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access, a free screen reader) on 26 October 2026, every finding fixed on the live site. A phone screen reader pass is the open item.
- Standing commitment: the automated and keyboard passes are re-run after any change to the site's components and before any release a board is told about, and a reported accessibility problem is handled under section 2.
- Already true by design: plain words with every abbreviation explained, large tap targets, keyboard arrows and tap-anywhere on the deck, motion that respects the reduced-motion setting, light mode with high-contrast ink on cream.
5. Privacy
- The site holds nothing about any visitor. No accounts, no sign-up, no forms that store anything, no cookies. Page views are counted by a cookieless counter (Vercel Web Analytics) that stores no identifier on the device and cannot identify a person.
- No student name, email, mark, score or plan is ever sent to or stored by Careerhelp. The finder and the comparer run in the browser; what a student types stays in their browser and in a share link they choose to keep.
- "Send to a student" opens the counsellor's own email program with the text filled in, or copies the message for them to paste; Careerhelp never sees the address.
- Counsellor notes on the comparers and the program finder are written into the link itself (the part after #, which browsers never send to a server). Careerhelp never receives or stores a note; anyone holding the link can read it, and the note box says so.
- In the terms a board's privacy officer uses: Careerhelp collects no personal information as defined by Ontario's MFIPPA (Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act); the host's request logs, kept for one hour, are the only place a visitor's IP (internet protocol) address exists, and Careerhelp does not read them; in the US, no education records as defined by FERPA (the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) are received, and nothing is collected from children under 13 for the purposes of COPPA (the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act).
- If any of this ever changes, the privacy page and this document change in the same release, and licensed boards are told in writing before the change goes live.
6. Support
- Who answers: Vedant Singh, by email at hello@career.help.
- When: a reply within one school day, Monday to Friday. A report of a wrong figure follows section 2.
- What a school gets beyond email: a written "what changed this year" brief each September, by email; a guide to every screen for staff to go through when they like. There is no live session to schedule.
- Price: by quote, for the entire site. No extra fees, now or later, for anything added to the site. One year at a time, no automatic renewal. The offer and the quote request are at /schools.
7. How this document is kept honest
- The document lives in the site's code repository and changes only by commit, so every change is dated and attributable.
- A task that touches figures, corrections, uptime, accessibility or privacy is checked against it before it is called done.
- Any commitment that is found not to be met is reported to the owner the same day, with what will be done about it, and the owner decides whether this document changes or the site does.
How the site is made, and who does what, is on the sources page. The offer to schools and boards is at /schools.
