No public survey covers Canadian hedge fund pay, so this is an estimate set below the US figures on the next card, because Canadian funds are smaller. A bad year can pay close to nothing. Job Bank's broad category for financial and investment analysts has a median of $43.27 an hour, about $90,000 a year, and leaves out bonuses.

Make a lot and the bonus can be many times your salary. Make nothing and the bonus is close to nothing. Lose money and you may lose the job.
Tuition, fees, exams and kit. Not rent, food or travel
The low end is a four year commerce or economics degree at the cheaper end of Ontario tuition, plus the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) program at about US$3,500 to US$4,600 for its three exams, roughly six thousand Canadian dollars with study materials. Many employers pay that. The high end is the Ivey HBA (Honours Business Administration) route at Western plus the same program. The analyst years before you manage money are paid.

In Canada, the person who makes investment decisions for clients must be registered with the provincial securities commission, such as the OSC (Ontario Securities Commission), as an advising representative of a portfolio manager firm. You need the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) charter and 12 months of relevant experience in the last 3 years, or the CIM (Chartered Investment Manager) designation and 48 months of experience. The firm registers too.

The biggest hedge fund employers are US multi-manager funds, called pod shops, such as Citadel, Millennium and Point72. Each pod has its own money and strict loss limits, and some Canadians move to New York to join one. Canada has fewer, smaller hedge funds, and its big pension funds run trading teams that use similar strategies with steadier jobs.
Day to day, pros and cons, where you'd work.
You are at your desk before the market opens at 9:30 am, reading overnight news and checking positions. During the day you watch the market, talk to analysts and company management, and decide whether to add, cut or hold. After the close you review profit and loss, risk and tomorrow's events. Earnings seasons are the busiest. A bad week follows you home.

At Millennium, one of the largest multi-manager funds, a manager who loses 5% of their money usually has it cut in half. Lose 7.5% and they are usually let go, according to the Wall Street Journal.
In most provinces, the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) charter plus a year of experience is the standard way to qualify to manage other people's money. In the US, no such personal exam is required.
Millennium has about 2,600 traders, analysts and portfolio managers working in separate teams. The rule for all of them is simple: make money and stay, or lose money and probably leave.
