What it adds up to

A rough price for one year, after the grants the average student at your family's income gets. Grants are gifts you don't pay back; loans are not taken off.

The grants are each school's full cost of a year minus its average price after grants for students at that income, for first-year students with federal aid. Your own offer can be very different: every school has a net price calculator on its website for a personal estimate. Prices usually rise a little each year.

About these numbers

Almost every figure comes from the College Scorecard of the US Department of Education, the same year for every school: acceptance rates and SAT and ACT ranges for students who started in fall 2024, tuition and costs for a year, students coming back for second year, and students finishing within six years.

Pay is the typical yearly pay of a school's bachelor's graduates in that field five years after they finished, from federal tax records. Where too few graduates of a program can be counted, the government does not publish it, and neither do we.

Test policies are for students applying this year, read on each school's own admissions page on 23 October 2026 and linked beside the policy, with any condition the school sets shown in its own words; the 21 schools whose pages could not be read keep FairTest's list. What schools require (essays, letters, grades) comes from the federal admissions survey for fall 2023.

Tuition history, campus housing and the school's own grants come from IPEDS (the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System), the federal survey every college answers. Debt, price by family income, who studies there and what happened eight years on come from the College Scorecard.

Everything is grouped by broad field of study. A specific program can differ from its field. Check the university's own page before you apply.
