Job Bank does not have a page just for makeup artists. It pools them with estheticians under one occupation code, and the closest page is permanent make-up artist: a median of $20 an hour, about $42,000 a year full time, with a low of $15 and a high of $30. Freelance bridal and film artists earn per job, so real yearly totals range far wider than this.

Most new artists start at a beauty counter or in a salon, on a base wage plus commission on product. Freelance jobs come on the side: grad photos, weddings, small shoots.

A busy summer Saturday with a bridal party can bring in several hundred dollars. Winters are quiet. Film and TV work in Toronto and Vancouver is union day rates, well paid but hard to break into.
Tuition, fees, exams and kit. Not rent, food or travel
There is no licence in most provinces, Nova Scotia being the exception, so what you are buying is training and a kit. The low end is a short certificate or a few workshops plus a starter professional kit. The high end is a six to eight month private school diploma, which can run into the tens of thousands, plus a fuller kit. Makeup is not a Red Seal trade so the federal Canada Apprentice Loan does not apply, though some private schools are approved for provincial student loans, and the kit keeps costing money long after you qualify.

High school
Grades 10 to 12
Art and photography. Do makeup for friends, school plays and dance shows. Photograph everything.
Makeup school or self-taught

CMU (College of Makeup Art and Design) in Toronto and Blanche Macdonald in Vancouver run full-time diplomas covering beauty, fashion, film and special effects. Many artists learn at a counter and from online courses instead.
Counter or salon job
1 to 2 years
A beauty counter pays you to do faces all day. This is where speed and product knowledge come from.
Freelance and assisting
1 to 3 years
Assist working artists on shoots and weddings. Take small paid jobs. Build a portfolio of 10 to 20 strong looks.
Specialize
Ongoing
Bridal, editorial, film and TV, or special effects. Film work usually means joining the union local in your city.
Visual arts
Colour theory, shading, faces.
Photography or media arts

In Ontario, Quebec, BC, Alberta and most provinces anyone can call themselves a makeup artist. Nova Scotia is the main exception: its Cosmetology Association licenses makeup artists along with hairstylists, estheticians and nail technicians. Permanent makeup (cosmetic tattooing) is different everywhere: it is treated like tattooing under public health rules and inspected for sanitation.

Day to day, pros and cons, where you'd work.
Bridal: up at 5am, on site at 6, five faces done by 10, then home to clean brushes and reply to booking emails. Counter: a 9 to 5 shift doing quick applications and selling product. Film set: call time before dawn, hours of prep, then touch-ups between every take until the wrap. Many artists mix all three across a week, and January is quiet everywhere.

Statistics Canada groups makeup artists with estheticians, electrologists, nail technicians and tattoo artists in one occupation code. The nearest Job Bank wage page is for permanent make-up artists.
Both cities host a large share of Canada's film and TV production. Set makeup there is union work with day rates, but getting in usually means years of assisting first.
Microblading and permanent eyeliner are cosmetic tattoos. Public health treats them like a tattoo studio: single-use needles, sterilization and inspections.
