Most casinos want one. Fast, accurate mental math matters more than your marks.

Be old enough
Age requirement
You must be of legal gambling age in your province, which is 19 in most of Canada and 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec.

Dealer training
4 to 12 weeks
A few weeks per game learning the procedure, the payouts and the hand movements. Many casinos run their own school and hire the people who pass.

Registration and background check
Weeks to a few months
You register with the provincial gaming regulator, in Ontario as a gaming assistant with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. The check covers your criminal record and your finances.

Add games, then move up
Year 1 onward
Roulette, baccarat, craps and poker each add pay. After a few years you can go to pit supervisor, then floor management or surveillance.
