  Industry training bodies run light, medium and heavy recovery levels. Several states and most insurers want at least the first one.

• A commercial driver's license

  The gate to heavy wreckers and rotators. Training runs a few weeks through a provider on the federal Training Provider Registry.

• Air brake and tanker endorsements

  Needed for the bigger equipment and for recovering loaded trucks.

• Roadside repair skills

  Jump starts, lockouts, tire changes and fuel delivery. Motor clubs pay separately for each.
