Certifications that raise your rate

• NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) water-based systems layout

  The credential for designing and laying out systems rather than only installing them. Several levels, and it moves you off the tools if you want.

• Inspection and testing of water-based systems

  The other NICET track. Building owners must have systems tested regularly, so this work is steady and recession resistant.

• Welding certifications

  Certified welders on pipe are paid more everywhere, and some systems are welded rather than grooved.

• Special hazards systems

  Clean agent and foam systems for data centers, museums and chemical plants. Specialized, and paid accordingly.
