  Law firms and courts. The best paid corner of the profession, and some posts prefer a law degree too.

• Medical and hospital librarian

  Supporting doctors and researchers with evidence. Specialized and well paid.

• Systems and metadata

  Running the catalog software and the data behind it. Closer to information technology than to the reference desk.

• Archives and special collections

  Rare books, manuscripts and institutional records, usually with extra archival training.

• Children's and teen services

  Not better paid, but the easiest specialization to get hired into in public libraries.
