A typical day

Most of it is at a desk: design software, calculations, specifications and drawings, plus a lot of email and coordination with architects, surveyors and contractors. A day or two a week you are on site in boots and a hard hat, checking that what is being built matches what you drew. Deadlines cluster around permit submissions and bid dates, and those weeks are long.
