The path

A degree, four years of supervised work, an exam, then the licence.

    High school

    Grades 11 and 12

    Calculus, Advanced Functions, Physics and Chemistry. Engineering admission usually wants marks in the mid 80s or higher.

    Engineering degree

    4 to 5 years with co-op

    A four-year civil or environmental engineering degree accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. Take every water course you can: hydrology, hydraulics, open channel flow, groundwater.

    Engineer-in-training

    About 4 years

    Register with your provincial regulator and work under a licensed engineer. Keep a written record of your experience.

    Professional practice exam

    During your training years

    A law and ethics exam set by your regulator.

  5. 5

    Get licensed

    About 8 years after high school

    You become a professional engineer, hold a stamp, and take legal responsibility for what you design.
