The path

It differs enormously by faith. This is the shape of the most formal versions.

1. 1

   High school diploma

   Grade 12

   Get involved in your own community: youth leadership, teaching, music, volunteering.

2. 2

   Bachelor's degree

   4 years

   Any subject in most traditions. Philosophy, history, languages and social sciences are common.

3. 3

   Discernment or candidacy

   1 to 3 years

   A formal process where your community and your denomination test whether you are suited to lead. It runs alongside school and can take years.

4. 4

   Theological school

   2 to 4 years

   Typically an MDiv (Master of Divinity) at a seminary or a divinity school, or the equivalent training in your own tradition.

5. 5

   Supervised ministry, then ordination

   1 to 2 years

   A paid internship or placement, then ordination, commissioning or appointment by your denomination.
