More than 15 million visits a year

CIHI (Canadian Institute for Health Information) counted more than 15.6 million unscheduled emergency department visits in the year to March 2026, in a country of about 41 million people. Not every province reports every visit, so the real number is higher. Most are not true emergencies, which is part of why waits are long.
