A typical day

Two or three hours of teaching and office hours, then meetings: a committee, a graduate student, a hiring panel. The research you were hired for gets squeezed into the gaps and the evenings. Summers and sabbaticals are when the writing actually happens. The freedom is real, and so is the fact that nobody tells you when to stop working.
