A typical day
Mostly reading and writing, with the tax code, the regulations and a stack of rulings open at once. A client emails about a deal that has to close in two weeks and wants to know what it will cost them in tax. You research it, model the outcomes, and write a memo that says what you think and how confident you are. Somewhere in the day there is a call where the accountants and the lawyers disagree about a number. If you do controversy work, add drafting responses to the agency and preparing for a hearing. And at a firm you record your time in six minute blocks all day.
