Credentials that raise your ceiling

• CPA (Certified Public Accountant)

  The big one. Most states require 150 semester hours of credit, a multi-part national exam and experience. Applications are processed by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy for many state boards.

• Enrolled agent

  An Internal Revenue Service credential that lets you represent taxpayers before the agency. Earned by exam, with no degree requirement.

• Certified fraud examiner

  Useful if you move toward criminal investigation and forensic work.

• Certified internal auditor

  Opens the door to internal audit jobs in companies and agencies.
