• Move to a federal job

  Federal probation and pretrial services pay considerably more than most counties.

• Specialized caseloads

  Drug court, mental health court, domestic violence and sex offense caseloads carry extra training and often extra pay.

• A master's degree

  Social work, criminal justice or counseling. Required for some treatment specialist roles and for moving into administration.

• Supervisor track

  Unit supervisor, then chief probation officer. Fewer home visits, more budget meetings.

• Bilingual certification

  A stipend in most large departments.
