The path

A bachelor's degree, then a three year clinical doctorate. There is no shorter route in most states.

1. 1

   High school

   Grades 11 and 12

   Biology, chemistry, physics and math. Start collecting observation hours in a clinic while you are still in school.

2. 2

   Bachelor's degree

   4 years

   Any major, as long as you complete the prerequisite science courses. Exercise science, biology and kinesiology are the usual choices, and grades matter.

3. 3

   Doctor of Physical Therapy

   3 years

   Three years at a program accredited by CAPTE (the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education). Roughly three quarters classroom and lab, one quarter clinical placement.

   Clinical rotations

   Within the doctorate

   Full time supervised practice across settings such as outpatient, hospital, neurological and pediatric care.

5. 5

   National exam and state license

   Months after graduation

   Pass the National Physical Therapy Examination, then license with your state board, which may also set a law exam.
