A typical day

Mostly ashore and mostly at a screen: cleaning data, running a model, writing a grant proposal, sitting in a meeting about ship time. Then a few weeks a year everything changes. On a research cruise you work a 12-hour watch, deploy instruments over the side at 3am, fix a sensor with the parts you happened to bring, and eat well because the cook is the most important person aboard. There is no getting off early, no weekend, and no internet worth having.
