A typical shift

Quality control on every instrument before any patient result leaves the lab. Then the samples start arriving and do not stop: blood counts, chemistry panels, urine, cultures set up to read tomorrow. You spot the result that cannot be right, repeat it, and call the ward straight away when a value is dangerous. An analyzer jams and you clear it. Most of the day is standing, sorting, loading and checking, and the volume rises with how busy the emergency department is.
