Car keys turned into computers

Since the late 1990s most car keys carry a transponder chip that the vehicle has to recognize before it will start. That is why a spare key costs hundreds of dollars instead of two. Locksmiths who invested in the programming equipment pulled a large share of that work away from dealerships.
