Certifications that raise your rate

• Certified Control Systems Technician

  The International Society of Automation's technician credential. The best recognized one in the field and often worth a pay step.

• Control system vendor certification

  Training on the specific platforms a plant runs. Techs who can configure and troubleshoot the control system, not just the instruments, earn more.

• Analyzer specialist

  Gas chromatographs and process analyzers are their own world, fiddly and badly understood, and specialists are scarce and well paid.

• Safety instrumented systems

  The systems that shut a plant down before it hurts someone. Certification here moves you toward engineering work.

• Electrician license

  Holding both tickets makes you far more useful on a small site and is a common route to a lead hand role.
