A typical day

Office days: read boring logs and laboratory results, calculate how far a footing will settle and whether a slope will stand up, then write the report that tells the architect what foundation to use. Field days: stand at a drill rig in a hard hat while a crew pushes samplers into the ground, log what comes up, and photograph it. During construction you go back to check that what is being built matches what the ground actually is.
