Qualifications that raise your pay

• Sawyer certification

  Faller levels A, B and C. A C faller who can drop big hazard trees is valuable everywhere.

• Wildland fire positions

  Firefighter type 1, engine boss, crew boss. Each step up the red card is more responsibility and more pay.

• Emergency medical technician

  Adds pay on many crews and is required on some fire modules.

• CDL (commercial driver's license)

  Lets you drive engines, water tenders and equipment trailers.

• GIS (geographic information systems) and drone skills

  Mapping work pulls you off the saw and into the jobs that last all winter.
