A typical shift

You take handover from the doctor going home and inherit their unfinished problems. Then you pick up whoever is next: chest pain, a cut hand, a child with a fever, an older person found on the floor, someone very drunk, someone very frightened. You are running six or eight patients at once at different stages. Every so often the radio says an ambulance is three minutes out with something serious and everything else pauses. Nine, ten or twelve hours later you hand over your own unfinished problems and go home.
