A typical shift

Briefing, then relieve the officer you are taking over from and count. Counts happen several times a shift and nothing else moves until the numbers match. Then meals, medication lines, visits, escorts to the yard or the medical unit, cell searches, and a great deal of watching and writing. Most of a shift is routine. The parts that are not routine arrive with no warning: a fight, a medical emergency, a person in crisis. Nights, weekends and holidays are normal.
