A typical day

Nothing schedules it for you, which is the hardest part. Most working writers set a word count or a block of hours, usually in the morning, and protect it. The rest of the day is the unglamorous half: research, revising a chapter you already thought was finished, answering an editor, chasing an invoice, posting about a book, and doing the paid work that covers the rent. Long stretches of this happen alone in a room with no feedback at all.
