A typical shift
Shifts rotate: mornings, evenings, then a midnight. You take over a position from another controller with a verbal briefing, then hold a live picture of every aircraft in your airspace in your head. You work a position for around an hour or two, then take a mandatory break, because attention does not last longer than that. Quiet stretches, then twenty minutes where everything happens at once.
