The path

A Red Seal apprenticeship, about 3.5 years in Ontario.

1. 1

   High school diploma

   Grade 12

   Shop, math, physics and any electrical or plumbing exposure. OYAP (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program) can start you early.

2. 2

   Find a sponsor

   Weeks to months

   RV (recreational vehicle) dealerships and service centres. Spring is hiring season. A lot handling or detailing job gets your foot in the door.

3. 3

   Register the apprenticeship

   Days

   Skilled Trades Ontario calls it Recreation Vehicle Technician (690H). Other provinces register it under the Red Seal name, Recreational Vehicle Service Technician.

4. 4

   Work and study

   3 to 4 years

   Ontario: 7,000 hours, 6,280 on the job plus 720 in school. Other provinces run 3 to 4 periods.

   Certificate of Qualification and Red Seal

   After your hours

   Pass the exam. The Red Seal endorsement works across Canada.
