A typical day

Hours on the reference desk helping people find things, from a school project to a legal form to a job application. Between shifts: choosing what to buy, running programs like story time or job clubs, teaching a class how to search properly, and committee work. In an academic library you meet students and researchers by appointment. Less shushing than the movies suggest, more helping.
