A typical day

Morning rounds on the leukemia ward: patients mid-chemotherapy with no immune system, watching for fevers and bleeding. Then the microscope, reading blood smears and bone marrow samples to make diagnoses. Afternoon clinic: a lymphoma patient in remission, someone with a clot in the leg, a teenager with anemia that does not add up. Calls from the blood bank about a difficult transfusion. Academic hematologists spend a day or two a week on research.
